We think we want to change from oil to gas. My question is should I consider just upgrading my oil burner?

* The Oil burner is LOUD
* Oil is perceived better and cheaper.
* I am getting quotes from 3 firms to install gas.

We live on Puget Sound (Washington State near Tacoma). We have a 50 year old oil burner that is in a closet in our 2 story house. The closet is in the room where we watch TV. It was state of the art in 1959, but... We have had it serviced and replaced parts as they break. We are heated by hot water in the floor downstairs, and pipes upstairs in pipes around the room.

I don't want to "wish and hope" that oil will be a magic solution. Cost is less of an issue that quiet and clean. But cost is an issue in this world.

A new gas fired condensing boiler should be quiet, an av you money on your heating bill.

Oil costs about 3.5 times MORE to heat with and is not a clean fuel. Natural gas is what you should switch too. Look into two stage or modulating 95% AFUE furnaces with variable speed blowers for the lowest noise and lowest operating costs with the most comfort.

If by gas you mean propane it may not be as efficient, maybe you should consider a ground source or geothermal heat pump, I know a few contractors doing a ton of theseeared he area when no natural gas is available.

The System 2000 oil units are pretty quiet other than that gas units are generally quieter. Oil as a fuel is at substantial price disadvantage with natural gas right now.
