I am replacing a goodman system in my 100 year old house. It is the 2nd story system so it is air handler in attic and ac unit outside with backup heat on air handler.

I am looking at 2 local companies both have great reviews and sound good but I am unsure of which one to go with

1st. American Standard gold series xi 15 seer 3 ton outside ac unit
and a American standard gold series xi GAM5A0B36M31SA air handler with 15K back up heat.

2nd Payne by Carrier 16 seer 2.5 ton PA16NA and a matching payne air handler with DC motor I am told this is a 2 stage system so it will run and remove humidity while not cooling

Both companies will install new lines, and new drain pan, drain, and overflow switch.

Any feedback or suggestions would be great

The Payne is NOT 2 stage. It's a low end, Mexican made high efficiency single stage unit. Both air handlers you are looking at have a high efficiency motor but neither are variable speed. The American Standard is a much nicer unit than the Payne. Probably lots more money too.

No A/C removes humidity when not cooling.

The only other way to remove humidity while not cooling is by adding a de-humidifier.

Incorrect, the Daikin Quaternity has a drying mode that runs without cooling, however when you run the drying mode in cooling it is "Sarara drying" I think there was a translation error in the manual lol.

Does it become a dehumidifier where a condenser reheats the air cooled by the evap?
