got a 2' section of 3/4 copper pipe near the outside unit that doesnt have any insulation, is the insulation actually necessay? Does it serve any purpose other than keeping the pipe from sweating?

Next time you have your annual checkup done, have them replace the armaflex insulation.
Don't lose sleep over it. Just have it done next time they're there.

Just prevents sweating. You can have your HVAC company re-insulate it on he next check up as suggested by vegas.
