View Full Version : Mismatching indoor coil and outdoor unit?

I have an old Heat Controllers 2.5 ton 8.2 SEER outdoor condenser. I'm not sure what the inside coil is but there's a pic of it below. If someone can let me know where to find some numbers on it, I would see if I can figure out what it is for sure. I'm not planning on being in the house any more than another 3 years but have been getting quotes to upgrade the system because it's just not efficient anymore and I'm afraid it won't last the summer. The cheapest quote that I've gotten involved replacing only the outdoor unit with a Trane XB13 2TTB 2.5 Ton 13 SEER R22. A friend of mine that does AC a state away says that this would mismatch the indoor and outdoor and not allow the indoor to "burn off the freon" enough and possibly burn up the outdoor unit. The alternative is replace both the indoor and outdoor for an additional $$$ installed and it will be a 4TTB using 410a. Will the mismatch most likely cause problems?
Thanks for the advice!

Since you only plan to be in home up to 3 more years, you would be better off purchasing a matched 13 SEER AC condenser even low end with a matching evap coil.

change the coil, and edit out your pricing.
that's an old cap tube coil, it will be nothing but problems.

I got a 4th estimate today from another company that is quite a bit less but would be a Goodman 2.5 ton 13 SEER 410a (10 year warranty) and "AT" indoor coil (1 year warranty). Being that I will only be here another 3 years, does this seem like a viable option? The other estimates were for Trane and Lennox.

An old 10 SEER condenser probably would not have worked right with that old cap tube coil...
The guy that quoted reusing that coil with a new 13 SEER R-22 unit needs to be run out of town.

Yeah i've pretty much tossed their bids out including the one a 410a system inside and out. I figure if their advice is that bad, their work can't be much better.

Very smart decision.

Any advice on the Goodman? That seem like an OK route to go? I save some money going the Goodman route, from what I gather the installation is more important than the brand anyway. It's a pretty establish HVAC company that would be doing the install. Only thing that concerns me is the indoor coil only having a year warranty but if that's pretty average then I'm ok with that.
Thanks!

Nothing wrong with Goodman.

as poorly as some companies are making indoor coils these days i would not be happy with a 1 year warranty.
with the reputation goodman has it may not be the best thing for resale value either.

What's an AT coil? I'd want a matched Goodman coil.

I'm not sure. He's coming to give a better estimate today and I'm going to ask a lot of questions.

Sorry i wasn't hearing correctly before. The indoor coil would be an "ADP" coil. He said that's the coil his goodman dealer sells.

Also, he hasn't been doing it as long (3 years out of school) and a younger guy like myself but seems honest and I know we all start somewhere. And actually the guy that had been doing it 25 years was the one who said I could just resuse the 8 SEER indoor coil. That's the first thing the last, younger guy pointed out was that the line was to small to reuse the old coil.

Well the last guy just called me back and shed a little doubt over that situation... He said he could do a Goodman coil for the same price as the ADP except it would still only be a 1 year warranty (I thought the Goodman coils carried a 5 or 10 year?), and that he likes the ADP because it's smaller and easier to install into an existing box (17"). But then he said if I wanted it done this week, I'd have to meet him halfway tomorrow (he's a city over) to front him the about 60% of the total amount to buy the equipment so he could do the install on Thursday.
This is all red flags to me now... looks like it's on to the next company.

The guy does not know what he is talking about goodman units come with a 5 yr or 10 year warranty including the coil ,i would also want a new box and get rid of the old moldy box ,might not want to use lw bidder

Yeah, I just confirmed setup with one of the other companies... Trane XB13 with a Trane A Coil. 10 year warranty on coil and compressor, 1 year parts and labor.

I'd rather have the all aluminum Goodman coil than a copper tube ADP coil...
