We need to replace a 3 ton gas package unit and have been quoted a replacement for either a Trane 16 seer or an Amana 15 seer. Both have identical 10 year warranty on labor and parts and Lifetime warranty on the compressor and heat exchanger.

The only real difference seems to be the trane "2 stage cooling comfort full humidity removal control and the 2 stage comfort gas heat variable speed comfort technology". The Amana claims to have a "2 stage comfort stainless furnace". The price differential is $ more for the Trane. We are inclined to go with the less expensive amana unless there is some compelling reason to go with the trane.

We live in Tennessee where the humidity can get pretty high in the full heat of the summer.

It sounds like you are looking at the XL16c unit. If you look at the Tim L testimonial on my YouTube link below you can see one in action. The Trane unit is quieter and much better built in my opinion. The two stages of the Trane will give much better dehumidification if coupled with the proper thermostat than the Amana unit.
