View Full Version : Common cause of air handler freeze up?

My air handler seemed to be making a dripping noise, so I turned the system off and took out the filter. When I looked at the coils, they were frozen half way up with a sheet of thin ice.
Everything is cooling, so I am not sure what the cause is. Hopefully it is something simple?

Yep.
You'll need a pro to fix that correctly.

that is usually caused by a lack of airflow or a lack of refrigerant.
if the filter was clean call a pro out.
if the filter was dirty...shame on you.

My filters are changed every 3 months. The most recent one is a 3M, and just a week old, I think with a 4 rating.
Since my system is just a couple years old, it shouldn't need freon unless there is a leak, correct?
If I do need freon, what are the likely places it might have leaked from? I know that is a very broad and general question, but considering the ignorant techs in my area that barely speak English, I'd like to have an idea for myself where the common leaks are.

Leak could be anywhere, call the Manufactuer and see who the recommend in the area to do service, could be a number of issues. you have already eliminated the fact of the restricted Fliter. at 3 years old, you should consider a service contract. You don't want a summer freeze up in S.Florida....

The 3M Filtrete air filters can be overly restrictive on systems with maginal airflow.
You may want to try replacing it with a cheap EZ flow filter and see if that helps, if not call a pro.
