Interesting video on what happens if you try and file a complaint against a police officer. Obviously not the right way to go about it lolz.

Pretty sad that most of those officers are still on the job.

Really, this video looked like a set up?
I might go along with that if it didn't consist of multiple precincts and officers.

I just played back the first minute or so and none of the clips started from the start of a conversation.
If you walk into a station or up to a cop and start making a pig of yourself to the extent that you've riled your mark to the point that he starts getting cranky then start the playback...
Just another day in the 60 Minute editing office.
I could be wrong but that's the way it looks to me.

I remember watching the full episode on this and they did show the encounters from start to finish with no editing. Then they showed the aftermath where they interviewed the officers commanders after showing them the tapes of the encounter.
Most, if not all, made excuses on how it was a lack of training on the matter, some promised to implement new training procedures or refresher courses. No one was punished or fired over the incident.
I am by no means a cop basher, in fact I fully support the police being in emergency services myself, but this was a common sense matter that became very hostile and threatening towards an innocent civilian. If an officer handled that incident that poorly I would agree he has no business being in law enforcement. Heads needed to roll.

In which case, I withdraw my previous cynicism.

actually Bob is correct.
Ever party with a bunch of cops? I have
ever go to a bachelor party with cops, I have, been to several parties.
Trust me, if you party with cops, it's reeeeaaaly hard to get in trouble when you party with cops :grin2::cheers:
They have this "thing" called Professional Courtesy, it works across *most* jurisdictions. (not all jurisdictions)
The general rule of thumb is, if you get stopped, tell them where you were AND DON'T HIT ANYTHING (if you hit so much as a mail box, they have no idea who you are, period)

Yeah, I have partied with a bunch of cops, and you are right they get away with a lot. I have played sports for years with some and some can turn real nasty as well!
I couldn't resist a little fun with Bob since he has a Police Car as an Avatar.

Work's for family members too. A little business card in the wallet acts like a get out jail free card. I have fist hand knowledge of that.....not me personally though.

Some of the responses by the various officers was certainly out of line, but if someone claims to be wanting to file a complaint then refuses to give any details or even identify themselves, IMO the officer has good reason to be suspicious.

Why?
You don't have a duty to identify yourself unless you are being detained for suspicion of committing a crime, AKA investigation. There is a ton of case law to support this and the Supreme Court even made a ruling on the matter.
That would be the equivalent of a officer getting suspicious because he asks me what kind of coffee I bought at the coffee shop and I refuse to answer.
Filing a complaint against a police officer should be a no questions asked policy for a desk jockey or beat cop. The only ones that should be allowed to ask anything is internal affairs, outside of them it really is no one's business what the complaint is about.

But, if you walk into that coffee shop, ask for a cup of coffee and refuse to tell them what kind, what are they supposed to do?

Please compare apples to apples when referencing my comparison.
We aren't talking about ordering coffee. It's not the desk jockeys job to be an investigator on an officer complaint, his only job is to give him the paperwork or get him in touch with the right people (IA).

oooooorrrrrrr
you could simply call the police dept and ask who is in charge of Internal Affairs.
ooooooorrrrrr
You could simply send a registered letter to the Chief of Police
ooooorrrrr
You could simply call/write the District Attorney.
There are so many easy ways to file a compliant it isn't funny.
Why make this harder than it needs to be.

Exactly, but the desk officer needs at least some information to determine what course of action is appropriate.

Legal issues aside, why would the police department (or any business or organization) take a complaint seriously if the person refuses to identify themselves?

My knowledge, or lack of it, as to how the process works is not my point.
How is the desk officer supposed to know what to do if the person refuses to give any details? Is the person claiming that they are being harassed by an officer or do they just want to complain about a parking ticket?

because everyone thinks it's just a form, like your complaining at customer service at Best Buy.
If your going to file a complaint with the police, write a damn letter.
Walking INTO a police station and whining to the desk guy isn't going to get you squat (obviously)

I know if you iniate contact with a ppliceman or they stop you , the first thing they ask is for your ID. Failure to show ID can and does result in a trip to the police station.
Heck, I called in because some little 16 year old girl destryed my mailbox and the first thing the sheriff asked for was my ID

You must show an ID to complain or to talk to a cop. But, you don't need an ID to vote!

NOT!!! you have no duty to tell the police anything at anytime.(unless your under arrest) Even if you walk up to them you have no duty to give your name.
If they try to detain you, they must have a valid reason. NOT giving them your name is not a valid reason. They can hold you for 24 hours, but if they don't come up with something a District Attorney and a judge is going to be very unhappy with them

It is exactly "just a form"
In fact many large police departments allow you to fill that form out over the internet to AVOID any harassment that may occur trying to obtain the form from a police station.
Do I have to show ID to fill these out???
