I'm working on installing a Goodman 2.5 ton ac unit to a rheem air handler which is 27 years old only catch is the air handler has never been used . The Goodman came with a piston style metering device. I looked at the coil and I think it already has a metering device but it's not a TXV were there any other style of metering devices 27 years ago ? The air handler model number is as follows Rheem RHQA 1010BAS. If anybody could give some info I would appreciate it.

it sounds strange to me. if the air handler is not rated for 2.5 tons then you will need the txv to get proper subcooling. if it has a piston style metering devise you will need to remove that and install a feild txv. i would recomend teh txv anyway.

Get a matched Goodman indoor unit. Or you will never work right and compromise the life of the outdoor unit. That coil is way undersized physically (refrigerant capacity) for the 13 SEER condenser. But since I doubt you'll do that, AT LEAST a TXV though it won't be a simple bolt on.

Agree with Baldloonie.
This RHQA air handler will only give you 1000 cfm at .30" wc ESP.
My guess is your ESP is much higher than .30" wc.
