View Full Version : How should a clean coil smell?
confusion

I've read through a lot of the odor threads and see there is a difference between a coil looking clean and being clean.
How should a clean coil smell?
Should it smell different when it's running (AC mode)?

A clean coil should have no discernable odor at all. Some cleaning agents may have a scent that lingers awhile after the coil is cleaned, but after that you should not notice anything unusual.

Thanks. Mine smells like wet aluminum and maybe that is what is being detected as very bad smelling VOCs.

Please - could you elaborate - what might cause that type of smell?

How should a clean coil smell?
it shouldn't smell , it has no nose...........
j/k. it really should not have an odor unless there is still chemical left on the coil.
did you clean this yourself or pay for a cleaning?
if it smells stronger after the coil has condensated for a few minutes then there may be need for a better rinse .

The HVAC contractor cleaned it in place after I told him there was a bad smell when the AC is turned on. It stunk for 2 days, so I rinsed it with water.
Today I used hot water and cleaned the coil and pan out again. I know the next step will be to have a contractor pull and clean it. I'm trying to learn about the coil because the AC does smell (ha - I wish it had a nose - maybe it would be able to tell me the source of the problem).
Appreciate all the great advice and info on this site. I should change my user ID to "still looking for a good HVAC contractor in Orlando FL" :)

OK... a few reports about this post being rude. Why is it rude? Who or what is Pony? If it is a rude comment, depending on the Pony definition, then Keeplearnin is once again out of line and will receive infraction points.
One of you guys stand up and tell me why his comment is rude. What am I missing?
If you don't want to post then hit the report button again and tell me.

When I read that comment I thought "what a dumb statement", so thanks for stepping in and saying something.
PONY is a guy with very limited knowledge and an even worse ability to correspond on here. Some people on here refer to "ignorant" questions or comments as PONY now. So, yes, it is a rude comparison.
The ho asking for information in know way was out of line or rude.
Seems there are two versions here so I've been PM'd and emailed.
Doesn't matter which definition is implied either a member here or the urban dictionary, both results in a rude offhanded slap either to the OP or to another member here or both.
I'm about done with all this. Keeplearnin has been warned before, banned before and he knows better. Testing my resolve here isn't a piece of ice to be walked on. When you are asked, told, infracted by a Mod then adhere to our site rules and policies. You be nice here or be gone.
Stick it with a fork, it's done. Bye, Bye.

But in all truthfulness....a clean A coil should not have a "smell". As posted, if it was recently cleaned, there may be a lingering smell from the cleaning agent, but it will dissapate within a few days. :.02:

Thanks wahoo.
The AC contractor is coming out Tuesday. I'm hopeful for a resolution to both the VOC odor problem and rebuild of the closet and upper plenum.
I appreciate everyone's time - this topic got a bit charged. I hope you all know some of us HO (me) know almost nothing about HVAC, and only know what we know because we are struggling with weird issues, usually from poor work, and not trying to stir up trouble.
My thanks to "Dad" too.

I have another thread where I posted an update to the VOC smell issue I'm dealing with: UV light experience so far .
For the evaporator coil, the AC contractor pulled and rinsed it with water since it had been cleaned in place by another contractor with some strong chemicals. These gentlemen let it sit outside while they worked.
Right now with the AC running, all I smell is mastic and since I like the smell of mastic, it smells good. I'm hopeful the coil is clean and smelling as it should now. Thanks again Pros.
