I have a 3-Ton Heat Pump, and I'd like to add a humidifier. Is this kind of addition something the homeowner is capable of doing? How do you choose the correct model?

No and by testing. I'd start with a blower door test first.

Since the air handler is located in the attic, I've decided to get an in-room humidifier instead. Cost is $$$ vs. $$$

It may be common for DIY types to attempt installing a humidifier. It's less common they get the installation right on the first try.
Skip is right...if you're wanting a humidifier, you're responding to a symptom of a larger problem regarding your house. If you like addressing symptoms, a humidifier is the answer. If you like getting to the root of the problem, weather sealing your house is the answer. The latter is more involved, but returns multiple benefits regarding comfort and energy savings, including a house that by itself will not get so dry in winter as your house may do now.
