Hello,

I'm looking to buy a house and did the home inspection today. The AC unit has damaged fins from what looks like to be damage from dogs chewing (see picture). The unit is working fine but I'm wondering if this is a major problem or something serious long term. Also, can the fins be replaced, or would a new unit be needed??

You're help and expertise is appreciated.

I don't believe that is from a dog CHEWING, but rather from a male dog urinating on it.

As far as repair, a new unit is the only "fix" that is reasonable.

Guessing it's not from a dog chewing. It's from the other end of the dog. It certainly doesn't help the units heat transfer ability. No it is not fixable. As long as it is not leaking, I would take my chances with it. In very hot weather it may have trouble keeping up though. Might start a "spare dollars and change" jar for a new on in the near future

Looks like my sister's unit. Been that way some time and cools great. That unit has some years on it, I wouldn't sweat it but figure at some point to be replacing it just as you would be without the damage. Of course my view could be in the minority. Wouldn't hurt to try to get some money out of the seller :D

come accross this a couple timmes
clean the coil real good and put some metal arround the bad part so the air goes through the rest of the coil and lasted years
like baldone said at some point you will be needing to replace
