View Full Version : Heatpump - sometimes it works and sometimes not

I have a Concept 1000 by Armstrong Air model # SHP10G30A. A few months ago I started having cold air coming out of the vents all the time. I only had warm air when the green "aux heat" light is on. So I had to constantly walk over to the Honeywell T874G Thermostat and turn up the heat until the green light comes on, and then remember to walk over and turn it back down so it will stop blowing cold air after the green light goes off. I figured it was just a bad cap in the heatpump and would get around to checking it eventually. In the mean time I walked out to check the mail and thought "Is that the heatpump running?" Sure enough, it was. Warm air was coming out and the green light was off. Hmmm... maybe it fixed itself. Nope. Wasn't long till cold air was coming out again. So I checked the cap, of course it checked out fine. Not knowing what to do next I called a friend that's in the HVAC business. He came and checked everything and said I needed a new Defrost Control Board and Defrost Sensor. So I ordered and installed new ones. Seems like it worked right for about a week and now its back to the same ole thing.... blowing cold air and heatpump only works some of the time. My friend has no clue what it could be. Does anyone here have any idea what could be causing this?

There are so many questions that you would be unable to answer and we cannot see it from here.... anything we said would be just a SWAG

We do not offer DIY assistance to level you are seeking, so you might need to contact a local contractor in your area that comes highly recommended from family and friends..

We do have a contractors locator map consisting of members here that may help you out ?

So what's the purpose of this site?

The site was started as a place for professionals in the industry to discuss our profession.

It has progressed into providing advise on what is better than what, do I need this, blah blah blah...

Step by step instruction on something that may endanger you and/or your equipment will not happen here.

Sorry, it is what it is.

You need a Professional to professionally diagnosis your problem.

Hmmm so now you just want me on the hook as opposed to the entire site when you blow your hand off or blow up your system???

No thanks, I would feel bad about that in 2 ways. My Arse on the line and your hand blowing off would give me bad dreams

To be honest, I have no faith in the "pros"... at least not one drawn at random from a list. My friend is a pro and he doesn't know. If he doesn't know, then most of the pros aren't going to know either. This site is a good place to find someone that will know. I've been using forums like this for years (tvs, pcs, atvs, cars, gardens, etc), but this is the first time I've ran into the information being "proprietary".

Good grief you sound like my mother telling me not to run with scissors lol! I've already changed the defrost control board (twice actually... once I soldered in new resistors to see if that was the problem on the old board) and if I can handle the million wires attached to that thing, I'm sure I can handle whatever else is in a "simple" heatpump.

I'm not asking for step by step instructions... just a few ideas of what could be the problem. Then I'll tell my licensed friend to check it out ;)

It is not and I am sure you could find a site on the WWW that will give you what it is you seek, but on this site of professionals step by step will not occur unless you are registered professional member.

You need a professional once again, this would be the only advise we are offering...

Good luck to you and yours...
