I have a change out today it's a two ton r-22. I'm replacing air handler condenser, electric heat. I want to go with 410a. The problem is the line set has a quarter in liquid and five eights vapor line, also it is about 20 ft. long but my main problem is it is laid out between the first and second floor and very tight. My question is is it okay to use this size line set as long as I flush it out or try to change it out with a three eights and three quarters inch line set keeping in mind that It may not be possible. Any feedback would be appreciated.

rhflhm2417ja air handler, 13han24a01 condenser, weatherking. From what I understand I need to use 3/8 ths. the 5/8 ths suction should be okay.

I've noticed since the jump in copper prices, some makers have backed off the 3/8 min size for liquid lines, but with a reduction of capacity. However if they do call for that, you will void the warranty and can cause problems down the line for the customer and yourself. if the 5/8 meets spec, you may only have to replace the 1/4'' line which may be easier to fish up to the space.
Most customers that have a problem will usually state: "that system that YOU put in is having a problem" so keep that in mind.

2 ton Rheem should be fine with 1/4" liquid line in a short run. You butchered the model # though.

Yea I got it over the phone the guy is hard to comprehend. Anyways on paper it looks like I can do it without any probs but I have a call into the ruud tech guy who's calling me back. I will post the answer.
I should be able to change to the 3/8 ths but the 5/8ths is just to tight, these are really old townhouses but all will be well when finished.

I would like to ask what may be a stupid question regarding the "reduced capacity" of running a smaller line set. Is there a formula to figure how much capacity is lost from smaller line set? Is it similar in formulating resistance of 90* bends and large lengths?

You have to refer to the manufacturer. no if ands or buts. i know some small tonage splits can allow for a .25 inch but with low length. i would contact the tech division of the brand and confirm or your just opening up yourself to a slew of problems and disappionted customers.

I haven't run into a 410 system with a small or undersized linesets, so I'm curious as to the higher pressure and velocities causing noise and or wear problems.
I should say yet.

ive seen one on a trane 410a system 2ton called tech assit and they told me to refer to the product manual and sure enough you can as long as the is no lift and its under 25ft. i would still install a 3/8 LL just for future replacements.

Guessing it's a 13AJN24, 1/4" is fine unless the outdoor units is a couple stories (23' down to be exact) below the evap. 5/8" is fine with 100% capacity.
