I had a chocolate store that I serviced that was next to a Chinese restaurant. The store smelled like Chinese food, and the chocolte was picking up the odor.Customers were complaining.
What we did was get activated charcoal filters for the 2 rooftop units that serviced the chocolate store. We also upped the filter change-out from 4 times a year,to 6 times a year. The problem was solved.

Before you go to expensive filters make sure you're exhausting as much of the smoke as possible. Work with the exhaust fans and make sure you have a properly designed make up air system to run the building at a slight positive pressure. You may need to convert the HVAC to a continuous blower system with some outside air intake to keep a positive flow pushing the smoke toward the hoods. I bet you can take care of most of it that way. We've done this in many restuarants and contained the grease in the area of the hoods.

another problem with charcoal filters is they attract moisture like a magnet. And quickly become useless in removing odors. However it may be the simplest way to achieve some relief. Odors are arisolized solids so there is an actual connection between these shops or exhausts from one are being picked up by the intake of another. I would make certain the exhaust from the guilty party was high enough and far enough away to avoid being pulled into the shop owners FA intake. Odors are slightly heavier than air so thier travel pattern will be a little different than the exhaust leaving. Also see if the BBQ shop will let you test his hood and building pressure. He may be over pressurising his shop to a point its forcing air into other parts of the building and into other shops.
